What does sheet metal bending on a press brake involve?
Sheet metal bending is a process in which the metal is deformed when a force is applied, causing it to bend into a pre-determined "V" or "U" shape. The press brake uses a punch and die to achieve this.
When a sheet metal part is bent, it physically becomes larger. The final dimensions will be greater than the total of the previous dimensions. Many say the material "grows" as it is bent.
The neutral axis is an area within the bend where the material undergoes no changes during deformation. On the exterior of the neutral axis, the material expands, while on the interior it compresses. Along the neutral axis, nothing changes—no expansion, no compression.
As the neutral axis moves toward the interior surface of the material, more material is expanded on the outside than is compressed on the inside.
